Notes

Fuseli spent eight years in Rome, arriving in May 1770. He soon became a central figure amongst the artistic community there and this period was critical to his development as an artist. His interest in Michelangelo is well documented in his Ode on Art written in 1770 and he produced a number of studies after Michelangelo in the following year (Schiff nos. 666-683). This is the only one of these studies recorded by Schiff still in private hands - the remainder being in Museums in Basel, Stockholm, Zurich, Weimar, Mannheim and the British Museum.
