Notes

Notes (1)

Will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné of the drawings by Ludovico Carracci in preparation under the direction of Dr. Babette Bohn.

Notes (2)

From 1605 to 1609, Ludovico executed together with Camillo Procaccini, a painter from Bologna and his rival during his youth who had moved to Milan, the decoration of the choir of the Duomo of Piacenza, devoted to the life of the Virgin. Only the frescoes and the two large paintings, Funeral of the Virgin and The Apostles at the Tomb of the Virgin, remain from this decoration dismantled in the early nineteenth century, now at the National Gallery in Parma (see Catherine Legrand, 1994, op. cit. p. 32.

Another overall study, most likely made before the present drawing, is preserved in the Drawings Department at the Louvre Museum, Paris, Acc. no. 7692 (see Heinrich  Bodmer, 1939, op. cit. pl. 131).
